Food for thought

Your cat's diet will be integral to this, as this is probably the single most important factor in promoting and sustaining a healthy weight. It is not just the amount that is imperative to get right, but the type of food and number of times per day your cat should eat.

Cats require a good daily dose of vitamins D and E, a source of Omega 6 and a balanced intake of minerals. When choosing cat food, be sure to read the packaging to ensure the nutritional requirements are met, whether the food is wet or dry. As cats can be fussy eaters, you may have to try a variety of foods before finding the one they prefer.

Quench their thirst

Having a bowl of clean drinking water available throughout the day for your cat is important, no matter how many times a day they are fed. Milk is not a substitues for water and is often best avoided.

Feeding time

The amount of food and how often to feed your cat is something our team at Boundary Vets can give advise on. This is dependant upon factors such as age, breed, activity levels and weight of your cat. At different stages of your cats life, they will have different dietary requirement which is important to remeber and always seek advicse on if you are unsure.

Food glorious food

There are certain foods that should be avoided at all costs because they are inherently dangerous:

  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Raisins and grapes
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Bread dough
  • Alcohol
  • Anything containing artificial sweeteners

Cats are not able to process carbohydrates effectively which is why giving them dog food is a no-go! The best way to promote and maintain a healthy cat weight is by sticking to meaty, nutritionally balanced and nutrient-rich cat food.
